New on the New York art Scene:
Zito Studio Gallery presents
ELS-LES: Every Last Sunday on the Lower East Side
- Open Studios, Galleries and Creative Spaces -
Starting last November, a group of
New York City artists started a new tradition in their neighborhood.
ELS-LES is a deep look into the arts community presently thriving
in downtown Manhattan. Artists running creative spaces open
their doors to the public on the last Sunday of each
month from noon to 6pm. Most
of the spaces on view are studios, workshops, or storefronts
where artists are actively working, performing or exhibiting,
and the range of what is being produced is uniquely varied.
Maps are available at each location,
and the event expands each month as new artists are added
to the list. For further information please contact
Event Coordinator, Antony Zito: 646.602.2338 - zitozone@yahoo.com

Family Portraits/Joe Grant

In an opening at his studio last year,
photographer Joe Grant unveiled a body of work – 50
to 60 original prints; vibrant, soulful images capturing the
core of Africa in subjects young and old. Joe, widely known
for his commercial work, spent two years traversing a dozen
or so countries in Africa, South and Central America, and
The Caribbean. What he returned with was a life-changing sense
of family - noting a unique African sameness in people of
color across the globe – and a passionate collection
of images to prove it. With each dioramic image pulling viewers
into its endless landscape, one woman at the opening commented
on how one Maroontown (Jamaica) girl reminded her of herself
in her youth; my son identified with “The River Niger”
- a black & white photo of two Malian children on a fishing
boat. I, personally, could not choose a favorite. I found
myself, or bits and pieces of people I knew, in them all.
Joe hopes to convey a message of oneness through this work
– our connectedness, despite the vast shores between
us and the differences in our present cultures; the fact that
our sameness outweighs our differences. Hence, the unofficial
name “Family Portraits.” Stay tuned for more info
