Harlem's Latest Wonders:
Most people think I still live in Brooklyn. Others imagine
I went to Detroit, never to return - this would account for
my scarcity in certain circles, I suppose. Truth
is, I am in Washington Heights......have been for several
years. Moved Uptown in '93. Found solace in my roomy
apartment on Broadway. Moved a few years later to a slightly
less roomy, but considerably cheaper one on Riverside.
As my life has it, I am all over the place. Until very
recently, we did NOTHING in Harlem 'cept eat and sleep...well,
sleep basically. Over the Summer though, the kids and I
have set out on foot to explore these glorious grounds.
And, O' the treasures you miss, whizzing by at 35 or 40 miles
per hour in an air-conditioned vehicle.
First of all, ladies...let's talk about the shopping...
* One Good Thing – OGT carries just
ONE of just about everything; vintage and collectibles, unique
home accessories, gift items, art, jewelry – you name
it. Prices range from a few dollars on up. Something for everyone!
One Good Thing Art & Soul Collectibles 367 Lenox
Avenue (between 127th & 128th) 646.342.7389
* The Brownstone –
Three floors of fashion and lifestyle excitement! Home of
Simply Greta elegant easy-wear for women, Princess Jenkins’
cosmetics & skin care, New World Africa artifacts &
home accessories, Virginia Joy bridal wear and much, much
more…..really to much to name. Oh! The Brownstone carries
my jewelry too. 2032 5th Avenue (bet. 125th
& 126th) 212.996.7980.
* Grandview –
Better contemporary clothing and accessories for the Euro-chic…give
Soho a break! 2531 Frederick Douglas Blvd. @135th
St. 212.694.7324. Take a gander at the site: www.grandviewfashions.com
Shop til you drop. Then treat yourself to…..
* Cynergy Spa –
The works! Cynergy is a full service day spa; facials, massages,
body treatment, manicure, pedicure, etc…. If you visit
the website, I’m sure you will be going to the spa:
www.cynergyspa.com
207 W. 135th Street; 212.491.7880
Speaking of Treats…..
* Jimmy’s Uptown – I will admit, I haven’t
eaten there. But who cares about the food – just look
at it! No really…..A spin-off of Jimmy’s Bronx
Café (I have eaten there, btw – seafood, and
it was delightful….overlooking the river in a most unlikely
spot in The Bronx), the scene at Jimmy’s Uptown attracts
the celebs, the ballers, and the shot-callers - Very Detroit,
if you know what I mean.
* Sugar Hill Bistro
– This place is fabulous! I mean, they renovated the
hell out of this three story Brownstone. The first floor boasts
a live jazz lounge, worthy of performances by Wynton Marsalis
and others. Enjoy The Bistro’s Southern French cuisine,
while basking in elegance on the second floor. Open for dinner
Tuesday through Saturday evenings, as well as brunch on Sunday.
The third floor, soon to be an art gallery, is available for
private parties. Although, they’ve just opened a few
weeks ago, The Sugar Hill Bistro is already a landmark as
far as I’m concerned. It’s sort of like The Russian
Tea Room à la Harlem. I guarantee (said with a Louisiana
accent), people will be coming from miles around to experience
this! 458 W. 145th Street; 212.491.5505
* Mamie’s Spoonbread
Too – Soul food in somebody’s kitchen.
Need I say more. Make room ‘cause if Norma’s on
site - the owner - she just might pull up a chair at your
table! Try the half & half (house lemonade and iced tea)….and
the fried catfish is cooked and seasoned to a T. 364
Cathedral Pkwy (a fancy name for 110th St.). 212.865.0700
Nightcap…..
* St Nick’s Pub- Certainly not new but…..everybody’s
making the trek for this. Why not you? A real tourists attraction,
St. Nick’s open mike attracts the likes of jazz all-star
musicians like James Carter, Bill Saxton, Patience Higgins,
and others. The band will eat you alive though….don’t
get up there unless you really mean it! 773 St. Nicholas
Ave. 212.987.6030
Of course there’s
more. Can’t give it all away on the first date though…..

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
2001
marks the 20th anniversary of guess what?…..The
Thong!!! Yes, Ms. Thong is 20 years on the market
this year. In 1981 when she was introduced, she accounted
for only 5% or women’s panty sales. 20 years later,
in 2001, Frederick’s of Hollywood reports that 75% of
panty sales are, in fact, Thong-th-thong-thong-thongs! Perhaps
Sisqo should have waited another year and made it into an
anthem; especially in light of his more recent flop. Happy
Birthday Ms. Thong!
…okay, not what you had in mind
but it is a thong?
Plus, how could I pass up this
opportunity to promote my work.
Qool DJ Marv….
“Marv is my guru” says
Alex at SX137, as he unshelves a stack of
Marv’s packaged, mixed CD’s. I am a bit befuddled,
“Marv is a DJ…” I am thinking. “What
the hell is he talking about?” Then he goes on about
the sensuous, spiritual, and creative essence of Marv’s
mixes, while he fingers through the CDs like a kid in a candy
store, trying to decide which one to play. “Do you want
to hear ‘Long Walk’?” he asks. He knows
I know this one and is hoping I will say yes. Meanwhile, I
know the restaurant has heard it 20 times today already. “Of
course, I want to hear ‘Long Walk’! How could
I not?” This is the mixed CD I acquired by mistake…after
hunting Marv down for a different CD (‘Sparkling’)
I heard on his morning radio program. ( That’s another
story….) Starts out with this absolutely magical violin
track, moves into vintage Stevie, some really obscure ambient
stuff, then on to a little R&B (D’Angelo, Erykah,
and, of course, Jill Scott’s “Long Walk’),
grooves back into the ambient, some soulful blues and out.
‘Sparkling’ on the other hand encompasses, perhaps,
the most eclectic mix of contemporary and, well…futuristic
jazz I’ve ever heard. It culminates in some drum &
bass, which leaves you wondering, “Where does he find
this stuff?”
Check out Qool DJ Marv,
Thursday mornings at 10 AM on WBAI (99.5
New York). The show, ‘Taste’ (formerly ‘Wax
Philosophic’) is co-hosted by Marv and Anastasia. Cop
one of his 80 or so mixed CDs at The House of Nubian
(35 W. 8th Street); www.houseofnubian.com.
Marv spins regularly on Tuesday nites at Naked Lunch
(17 Thompson St. @ Grand), and at SX137 (137
Essex @ Rivington) on Saturdays. To reach Marv or to find
out his schedule, e-mail him at DJQOOLMARV@aol.com,
or call 800-678-2194.
