More Harlem Tid-bits……
I told you there was more! Here
are a few things I missed in the last issue:
Sugar Shack Fridays
– Get your Southern grub on while lickin’ your
lips to the old school grooves of the live DJ. Fridays at
Sugar Shack….or anyday for that matter. 2611 Frederick
Douglas Blvd. 212.491.4422
Hue-Man Books - Clara
Villarosa, a feisty bookseller who was a member of the board
of directors of the American Booksellers Association and operated
the original Hue-Man Experience (Denver – the largest
African-American bookstore in the nation) for 16 years, had
been trying to open a bookstore in Harlem since she moved
there last year. Not without a struggle, Clara will be opening
the doors of Hue-Man Books some time in May. With help from
Chadbourne & Park (a New York City law firm that worked
pro bono for her) and The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone,
Clara is able to bring a whopping 4000 sq.feet of African-American
literature to Harlem! (Move over Barnes & Nobles…with
your measly AA book section). Hue-Man Books will be located
in the Harlem USA Complex at 125th Street and Frederick
Douglass Boulevard. The complex features Magic Johnson
Theaters, a Disney store and other shops. More to come on
the opening of Hue-man Books.
Native -161 Lenox Avenue @
118th St. - Lenox is on the rise.....and Native,
an all-American eatery, finds itself right in the mix.
No, not American as in burgers and apple pie...but, American
in its broader, well, New York sense. Native coins itself
'An All World's Bistro'; serving up a simple, cost-conscious (!) menu
with a little something for everybody. Its cool, casual
interior and sidewalk cafe effect, could place it next door
to the most frequented eateries on The Upper West Side, Tribeca, or in
The Village. Although, they opened their doors six months
ago, the owners say the real opening isn't until September.
This has just been a trial....and the news from the neighborhood
is good! Native is open from 11am - 11pm Tues. thru Sat.,
serving brunch ($9.95!) on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 -
4. No reservations necessary - it's not that kinda joint!!!

Settepani is a newcomer
to Lenox Avenue as well. Open 7am – 9pm daily (closes
early on Mondays), make this fine Italian bakery and coffee
shop your one stop for morning brew, evening sweets, or your
next blind date ;-) While I did not meet the owner/s on my
visit, an authentic African influence is clearly present.
The décor, however, is very European; minimally elegant,
yet open and inviting (in a Starbuck’s kinda way). A
very charming mix. 196 Lenox Ave. NYC 10026. 917.492.4806
Of course, Harlem is a treasure-chest unfolding. I’ll
keep you informed as I find out more…

it’s well worth the wait!)
Guess what?! Money CAN buy
you happiness…..
…..but only in relation to how much of it you had to
begin with. Click here for a fascinating survey on who’s
happy….and why: New Scientist Click

An idle mind is you-know-who’s workshop:
Check out this very naughty but brilliant, and slightly sick
comic strip: www.demian5.com.
Only if you dare. Not for the prudish or faint-hearted. Oh…and
it’s reeeeeaaalllly long….so don’t even
go there unless you have absolutely NOTHING to do…!
Oh, and if you hate it or find it absolutely offensive….you
didn’t hear it from me.
Win The Day:
The year is half over (can you believe it?!), and I would
suggest you get a head start on next years’ calendar.
Here is one of my favorites…..and, unfortunately I cannot
tell you where to find it – how tacky is that? A friend
of mine (dare I call him that?) got one of these for Christmas
last year and I thought it was just adorable: The “2002
Win The Day! Daily Boxed Calendar.” This little
thing is sooooooooo cute, and contains 365 of the most profound
quotes; all geared towards personal and professional prosperity.
I have read that “…It is important to start the
day with the right words.” On that note, I would suggest
picking one of these up. Keep an eye out for it at Barnes
& Nobles (www.bn.com).
