Now
That You Could be Labeled an Enemy Combatant...
by Heather Wokusch
"Put it all together, and last week's passage
of the Military Commissions Act is
ominous for those in the US. As Bruce Ackerman
noted recently in The Los Angeles Times, the legislation
"authorizes the president to seize American
citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have
never left the United States. And once thrown
into military prison, they cannot expect a trial
by their peers or any protections of the Bill
of Rights." The
vague criteria for being labeled an enemy combatant
(taking part in "hostilities against the
United States") don't help either. Would
that include anti-war protestors? People who criticize
Bush? Unclear."

'The
Devil came here' - Full text of Chavez U.N. address
Read
Chavez's UN speech for yourself. His comments
- likening George Bush to The Devil - were taken
largely out of context by the media. Many of my
readers, I'm sure, will agree with him and have
probably entertained the thought on more than
one occasion themselves. I applaud Chavez's honesty
and courage, for publicly announcing what many
of us were thinking in the first place. It is
important, however, not to get lost in the dramatics
of his delivery. Chavez had an urgent message
to impart, not just to Americans, but to the inhabitants
of the world; all of whom will be affected by
the decisions an actions of a single "Devil."
Chavez
opened the address by recommending Noam Chomsky's
recent book, Hegemony or Survival:
The Imperialist Strategy of the United States,
as a guide to "help us understand what has
been happening in the world throughout the 20th
century, and what's happening now, and the greatest
threat looming over our planet."

The following was excerpted from an email
sent by Bill Koehnlein - Sep 24, 2006
Following Hugo Chavez's great UN speech--which endeared
him to the
entire world--and his remarks later that week to a receptive
and very
appreciative Harlem audience, Charles Rangel, the uptown
Congressional
rep, had this to say:
"You do not come into my country, my congressional
district, and you do
not condemn my president. If there is any criticism
of President Bush,
it should be restricted to Americans, whether they voted
for him or not.
I just want to make it abundantly clear to Hugo Chavez
or any other
president, do not come to the United States and think
because we have
problems with our president that any foreigner can come
to our country
and not think that Americans do not feel offended when
you offend our
Chief of State."
Here is a copy of a letter I faxed to Rangel at both
his New York and
Washington offices.
Beat
the Devil!
-Bill Koehnlein
September 24, 2006
Hey Charlie!
Lighten up, man!
You said, "If there is any criticism of [the Devil],
it should be
restricted to Americans...." Since when is the
Devil, or any other high
government leader, immune to criticism from a non-American?
Look at all
the criticisms made by Cheney, Rumsfeld and the Devil
himself against
Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, not to mention numerous
other heads of
state and high-level officials of various governments.
Etiquette and social nicety has not hindered the Devil
from constantly
whining and droning on about "evil doers"
or "evil ones"-appellations
applied liberally by him to various world leaders and
political
dignitaries.
In fact, the actions of the Devil have gone beyond mere
criticism. The
Devil has threatened both Chavez (and even helped launch
a coup d'etat
against the legally-elected government of Venezuela),
and Castro (and
the Devil continually does his utmost to strangle, weaken
and create
social instability in Cuba). The Devil has invaded sovereign
states or
taken other actions to undermine or overthrow them;
he has been involved
in political assassinations; he tortures innocent people
at will; he
capriciously deprives others of their freedom; he has
plunged the world
into a ghastly war that threatens not only the Middle
East but the
entire planet itself.
...
.All Americans as well should demonstrate their gratitude
to him [Hugo Chavez] for telling it like it is. In fact,
most do. It's only the corporate media and hysterical
politicians who seem to be chagrined.
Sincerely-
Bill Koehnlein

Reflecting on Fidel
Castro....
 |
Recent
reports of Fidel Castro's life in a valance have
left me reflective....of his regime, Cuba in general,
and what little truth Americans have been fed
about the man, his life, and his legacy. I found
this (rather flattering) documentary/slide show
on MSNBC and just wanted to share it. By the time
I decided to post it (later the same day), the
link had mysteriously moved. You can try launching
the side show from THIS
PAGE...although I cannot guarantee
how long it will be posted.
Castro,
who celebrated his 80th birthday in August, is
said to be in failing health, although the exact
cause of his illness has only been speculated
upon by the media. Castro assumed power in 1959
and has outlasted nine U.S presidents. Randall
Robinson, in The Debt (page
4), also sheds great detail about Castro's
feats, history, and the U.S./Cuban relationship. |

"I
warn you, I am just beginning! If there is in
your hearts a vestige of love for your country,
love for humanity, love for justice, listen carefully...
I know that the regime will try to suppress the
truth by all possible means; I know that there
will be a conspiracy to bury me in oblivion. But
my voice will not be stifled – it will rise
from my breast even when I feel most alone, and
my heart will give it all the fire that callous
cowards deny it... Condemn me. It does not matter.
History will absolve me."
